ACI Open, the Open Access companion journal to Applied Clinical Informatics, seeks to publish informatics articles in areas that are lacking from the informatics journal landscape including governance within healthcare institutions, including data governance and the process by which new tools are added to clinical information systems, public health informatics, with particular attention to work that is typically solely presented at public health conferences, as well as ethical issues in clinical informatics including fairness of prediction models, safety issues related to artificial intelligence and machine learning (including large language models), data sovereignty, and the need to diversify the clinical informatics workforce.

ACI Open serves a global target group including clinical informatics officers, medical informatics researchers, nurse informaticians, public health officials, IT safety healthcare providers, informatics trainees, health information management as well as health informatics practitioners.

The journal publishes original research, review articles, Best Practice papers, letters to the editor, and “Informatics Briefs”.

ACI Open publishes continuously online, ensuring rapid dissemination of accepted articles and immediate access to new research.

The journal content spans a broad range of health information technology tools including clinical information systems (including electronic medical records and systems, personal health records, physician/provider order entry, electronic prescribing, clinical decision support, nursing information systems, patient scheduling and tracking tools, lab information systems, radiology information systems, PACS, GP information systems), mobile health applications, administrative and management systems, eHealth systems, information technology development, deployment, usability, and evaluation, socio-technical aspects of information technology and health IT training.
